about

"Beecher's Bibles" was the name given to the breech-loading Sharps rifle that were supplied to and used by the anti-slavery settlers and combatants in Kansas, during the Bleeding Kansas period (1854–1860).

Kansas City sludge metal band Tenant named their debut album after these rifles, notably used by the radical abolitionist John Brown, who the album is dedicated to.

"Musically it’s not an engaging band, except for some melody-driven parts, and stoner rhythms like on “Rent notice”. But who expects sludge to be gentle? It is highly enjoyable, though. Think of a more funeral version of ACID BATH, and the “In the name of suffering” era of EYEHATEGOD. Flirting with every possible aggressive extreme sound at hand. We get grindcore on “Railcar Carrion”, “Ensanguinator”, and many other specific moments that will also add black metal, huge doses of doom, death/doom – “Human Capital Stock” – hardcore, and a very obvious involvement of harsh noise – “Hive for a House”, the whole “General Electric”, etc -. “Let’s Lynch the Landlord” is a punkier version of them, and there’s even room for what it feels like free jamming; the opener, and the final song." - Antifascist Black Metal Network

“Tenant plays an especially truculent variety of sludge, modulating from nasty, scabrous riffing (mostly); to gut-thumping grooves (sometimes); to interstitial bursts of screeching, distended, unstructured noise…. In its sonic attributes and apparent ethos, Tenant strikes a position somewhere between Eyehategod’s nihilistic abandon and Thou’s more disciplined musical aesthetic and politicized themes. It’s a rich place for the younger band to locate itself: enraged enough to descend into vicious fulmination and volume, focused enough to match their intemperate sound to forms that channel all the passion. Beecher’s Bibles is quite good.“ - Dusted Magazine
